Biography
Science, teaching and clinical practice.
Prof. Ana Catarina Nogueira da Silva graduated in Dental Medicine from the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Porto (FMDUP). She went on to specialise in laser dentistry at RWTH Aachen University in Germany — one of the world’s leading institutions in the field — where she completed the Mastership in Laser Dentistry and the Master of Science in Lasers in Dentistry. She also completed EMDOLA, the European Master Degree in Oral Laser Applications.
She earned her PhD in Dental Medicine at FMDUP, with research focused on the clinical use of lasers. She is a Professor of Operative Dentistry at the same faculty, where she also supervises master’s dissertations in this field.
She founded and directs Portugal’s first Institute of Laser Dentistry and is Head of Laser Dentistry at White Clinic in Lisbon. In clinical practice she favours a minimally invasive approach, in which the choice of wavelength and parameters is tailored to each tissue and each patient.
She is Portugal’s Ambassador to the International Society for Laser Dentistry (ISLD) and a member of the General Council of the Portuguese Dental Association (Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas). She chaired the Organising Committee of the 19th ISLD World Congress, held in Porto in 2024 — Portugal’s first laser dentistry congress, with more than 230 delegates from over 30 nationalities — and sits on the Scientific Committee of the 20th World Congress in Dubai in 2026. She has published scientific articles and speaks regularly at national and international congresses.

Research
The evidence behind the light.
Prof. Ana Catarina’s research focuses on how lasers interact with dental tissues — in particular, the bonding of restorative materials to laser-prepared dentine — and on their use in operative dentistry.
